Discovering Croatia: Unconventional Digital Nomad Destinations for 2023

Discovering new cities, immersing yourself in their culture, and working while you travel is the way of the digital nomad. As the lifestyle becomes more popular, more and more countries are embracing the economic bump that digital nomads create when they decide to settle in a new city. In the last few years, we’ve seen digital nomad-friendly visas, tax exemptions, and loads of other enticing offers designed to draw nomads to new territories. This is all great news for the digital nomad community. Suddenly, there are parties everywhere, and you’ve got an invitation to all of them. So, as the world opens up even more, what are the hot new spots for 2023?

CROATIA. THE “MOST LIKED COUNTRY”?

Yeah. It’s true. According to Nomad List, Croatia is the “most-liked” country by digital nomads so far in 2023. This is huge news. Croatia beat out Japan! And everyone else, obviously. There’s definitely something cooking in Croatia right now. Before we dig into all the great reasons to live there, let’s take a look at all the great things Croatia has done to embrace the digital nomad community.

CROATIA WANTS YOU

Croatia was the first European country to launch a DNV (digital nomad visa). The visa costs around $100, and you’ll need to prove you make about $2,713/month during the duration of your stay. As far as visa applications go, this one is fairly simple to get. It’s nice to feel welcome, isn’t it? In general, the population is open to hosting nomads, and Croatians are regarded as friendly people. The country is quite safe, especially for female travelers, which is another number that Croatia has on the rise. The infrastructure is adapting well to the influx of temporary works, and the number of long-term rentals available is plentiful. The co-working community is strongest in the larger cities, but you’ll see shared workspaces popping up all over the country as the nomad movement grows.

BEST TIME TO VISIT CROATIA

The peak tourism season in Croatia is summer. If you’re into beach activities, water sports, and swimming, you’ll love exploring Croatia’s bustling coastlines. The only downside, beaches, and coastal cities can get pretty busy from June to August. If you’re into hiking, sightseeing, and enjoying exploring new places on foot, Spring and Autumn are better ideas because you’ll be able to avoid the intense heat, and national parks, cultural sites, and other attractions are much less busy than in the Summer. If you really want to experience the country, stay through winter and enjoy a nearly tourist-free November to March. Croatia has world-class skiing in its inland mountains and national parks surrounding Zagreb. The coast isn’t nearly as cold as the inland parts of the country, so if you’re not a huge winter fan, stick close to the water.
